  • The sgian-dugb (skeean doo), was a single or double edged black dagger worn in the stocking on the dominant hand side of a Scottish Highlander, usually on the right. Dugb translates “black”, which eludes to both it being hidden or secret, and to the color of the grip, usually of antler or ebony.

In earlier use it sometimes had a clipped point, not unlike a small bowie.

Originally upper class Highlanders would not have displayed the sgian-dubh, (it was more a working-man’s blade). But after Queen Victoria made Highland dress “fashionable” in the late 1800’s, the sgian-dubh appeared in portraits of noble Highlanders and English alike.

An effective hunter’s knife in practical use, or weapon of last resort, it would sometimes be fitted to match the Highlander’s dirk.
