Why MagnaCut Steel?
When it comes to knife steel, MagnaCut is redefining the standard. Here’s why:
-
High Toughness: MagnaCut is tough enough to resist chipping and breaking, making it ideal for hard-use knives like larger blades designed for chopping. Even on smaller knives, its toughness allows for a thinner edge without sacrificing durability.
-
Good Edge Retention: This steel holds its edge well, so you can expect sharpness that lasts, whether you're preparing food or tackling woodworking projects.
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: MagnaCut is incredibly corrosion-resistant, so it won’t rust easily, even in wet or humid conditions. This makes it perfect for knives that see heavy use outdoors or near water.
What Is MagnaCut Steel?
MagnaCut is a powder metallurgy (PM) steel, created from ultra-fine particles of metal sintered together. This process results in a uniform microstructure, which is why MagnaCut excels in toughness and edge retention. Its microstructure is even finer than other premium PM steels like S35VN, M390, and Elmax.
Who Makes MagnaCut Steel?
CPM-MagnaCut is produced by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Niagara Specialty Metals in Akron, NY, USA. The “CPM” stands for Crucible Particle Metallurgy, which refers to the steel's formation as a powder metal alloy.
How Good Is MagnaCut Steel?
Early tests have shown MagnaCut to be as tough as high-performance steels like CPM-CruWear, with comparable edge retention. While other steels may surpass MagnaCut in edge retention alone, none can do so while also offering toughness and stainless qualities. MagnaCut is more corrosion-resistant than CPM-20CV and nearly as stainless as virtually rust-proof alloys like LC200N.
These properties suggest that MagnaCut is a game-changer, and its rapid adoption in the knife industry supports that claim. Whether for EDC pocket knives or hard-use fixed blades, MagnaCut delivers the high performance that every knife enthusiast seeks.
